Manihiki Magic - How long can you go without greens?
The Famous Red Tractor |
Five weeks ago our little family was setting foot on this beautiful island of Manihiki. This means that it's been at least five weeks since we've last eaten a salad, bitten into a juicy orange or enjoyed the crick crock sound of a carrot.
We started writing about our incredible time in such a remote place about two weeks ago. It makes us realize that this adventure is real. It will confirm once we are back to reality that this wasn't just a dream. It is also a way for our families and friends near and far to be one step closer to us by following our stories. Manihiki is just an idea for most people, the Black Pearl Island. The current Prime Minister's Island. Unlikely the home of a French - German family of 4 with their habits!
Well, amongst those readers of ours, there is a good Samaritan who knows what it's like to live in the outer islands, the Pa Enua. As beautiful, incredible and fascinating as this island is, as delicious and fresh as the fish and coconuts are, fruits and vegetables are well missed by visitors to this little paradise. This is the one change that our bodies really need to adapt to.
So when a chartered plane arrives on a Monday, you're sitting at home having lunch (fish and rice) after school and the red tractor stops in front of your house, you know it's your lucky day! And sure thing... Personal delivery of a blue chiller bag!!! This is good! It is almost better than Christmas! Never thought we would ever get so excited about a grocery bag full of freshness and vitamins. And other things... Our angel follower has thoughtfully read the Kwai post on our blog and knew exactly what we were craving : chocolate powder for breakfast!!! Not a must-have on a remote island but definitely a fabulous-to-have food item that is putting a smile on our faces every morning.
The Blue Chiller Bag |
We slowly opened the blue bag to find treasures one after the other. We had to stop ourselves from munching away all the goodies right away! Now, what's for dinner (it's 1pm now!)? A tomato and carrot SALAD of course ! With red onion, fresh bread and fried egg, that will make the perfect papa'a dinner. Mmmh!
Lemons, eggplants, tomatoes, bok choi, pumpkin, red onions, carrots, pears and apples. Oh, and also chocolate powder, popcorn and a tin of peaches!!! Mmmmh... |
While preparing this fibre feast, our little monster kept coming back to us. "Encore mamate pleaaaase"! Or "more tomato please" when translated from approximate French. What he really means is "Encore une tomate"! Okay, they were small tomatoes but still, we told him it was enough for one day! His poor little stomach might not cope with that amount of goodness all of a sudden - or at least that seemed like a good excuse to make him stop eating them all with the first meal. It is almost impossible to reason with a hungry 2 1/2 years old about saving food for later. And who would stop him from eating fruits and veggies? In the end, Yann ended up enjoying five delicious tomatoes satisfying his craving for vitamins!
Mmmh, what a day! Apart from the rain that woke us up splashing our faces in the middle of the night, we had a wonderful, rejuvenating sleep.
Meitaki Korereka to our generous angel for working some island magic to get those groceries delivered all the way from Rarotonga to our doorstep in Manihiki! Your kindness and thoughtfulness are highly appreciated!!!
A nice lunchbox including rice, cashew nuts, peanut butter bread and... apples! What does this cute vitamin monster go for first? You got it, APPLES!!! |
Caught in the act!!! |
PS: the two tablets of Cadbury chocolate have strangely disappeared from the shots... Chocolate monster?
