Manihiki Magic - A Dining Guide to Manihiki
Step 1 - Catch the fish. Frederick & Isaac showing off with their catch on the jetty |
When
you live in Manihiki you will learn two things. 1)Appreciate probably the
most incredible seafood of the world. 2)Be proactive about dinner
planning.
There are no
restaurants in Manihiki, so when you are getting an appetite, you better
make sure that you are prepared. Going down the road and picking up a
takeaway is not an option! Don't even think about pizza delivery. It is
not going to happen.
There
are also no supermarkets in Manihiki just a few little shops. Tukao has two
shops that sell about the same general supplies - sugar, flour and rice - as well as basic food items such as cans, juice, soap and chips. Plus you can always get the latest news at the shop, especially when you meet shoppers who came all the way from Tauhunu (20min boat ride)!
Step 2 - Clean the fish in the lagoon. While cooling off at the end of the day. |
Getting
back to our dinner guide, it is simple. Just do it yourself and you
will eat like a King & Queen in Manihiki! Our landlord Trainee
always provides us with beautiful fresh fish that he catches after work
going out netting or spearing. Yesterday we had some surgeon fish, a peacock grouper, a goat fish and the best of them all, a true Manihikian
delicacy: a yellow spotted Trevally. The locals call it the Pava. Grilled on the open fire, it is the best fish we have ever had!
Step 3 - Build a fire. Always better with a smile! |
Step 4 - Cook the fish on a hot plate, in an old drum. And with a view. |
Step 5 - Watch you fish turn into deliciousness. Which one is your favourite? |
Why
do you learn how to plan when living in Manihiki? Because you need time
to prepare the food yourself, with limited amenities. Yesterday, the fish was given to us so we
only had to clean them, collect wood, build a fire, cook the fish, boil rice. Last but not least, invite our friends and share the beautiful, true Manihiki meal! Fish & Rice.
Step 6 - Fish & Rice on a plate. And eat with your hands please, it tastes so much better! |
We will let the pictures speak for themselves and wish you all - Bon Appétit!
Step 7 - Share a beautiful meal with your friends. Bon appétit!
