Things we take for granted – Drinking Water

The boys on a mission - ready for a 300m walk to the water station

After having spent 3 months on Manihiki we start really operating on island time. It feels so rejuvenating to slow down a bit. Also, and we do apologize for this, it is a natural phenomenon here on the island, we started being a bit complacent with our blog. Finding topics when there are so many to choose from seems like a big task in 30 plus degrees heat. But there are so many things that we could and should write about.

So we decided to initiate the category “Things we take for granted”. Simply because at home (Germany, France or Rarotonga!) there are so many things that we don’t even think about. We enjoy them without truly appreciating how amazing and luxurious certain services are, the ones that we consider normal in our households.

How exciting to be out with Papa!

You wouldn't believe it when you are comfortably able to drink water in the shower or have drinking water flushing the toilet. But here in Manihiki we got to appreciate the luxury of drinking water. As simple (or not...) as that.

Here in Manihiki no one that we know has drinking water taps at home. It is a weekly task to go down to the water station, a communal water filling station. Here everyone can fill up their drinking containers with filtered rainwater. The filling station is where people meet, have a chat about the weather and so important for a safe and healthy water supply.

Two micron filters, one carbon filter and a UV light to ensure safe drinking water, straight from the sky

Safe practices. Don't forget to wash your hands and cover your cough and sneeze! (People do catch the flu despite the tropical weather...)

Yann and I usually go to fill up our 60L water drum on Saturdays. We get the neighbour's wheelbarrow and walk the 300 meters down to the filling station. This weekend we saw Koa during our excursion. He is one of the workers of Manihiki Island Government and was collecting coconuts and preparing the nimata for the weekend just next to the filling station. Big smiles and off we are on our way back home to start our iced tea project. How that one works we’ll tell you about in one of the next posts!

Happy weekend and enjoy a chilled glass of water!
